Reducing the milk fever risk
Milk fever, also known as hypocalcemia, is a metabolic disorder in dairy cows caused by low calcium levels in the blood. It typically occurs around calving and primarily affects highproducing cows. Symptoms include muscle weakness, tremors, and difficulty standing. Milk fever is also associated with immunosuppression and is therefore an important factor in the development of secondary diseases.
Clinically apparent milk fever affects about 3–5% of cows in a typical herd. However, subclinical hypocalcemia – where cows have low blood calcium levels without obvious symptoms – can impact a much higher percentage, sometimes exceeding 50% in older or high-producing cows.
Effective preventive strategies are essential to reduce both clinical and subclinical cases.
